The image content matters
PNG often suits screenshots and simple graphics. A large photograph stored as PNG can be much bigger than a lossy photographic format. Different kinds of content compress differently.
Compress keeps PNG
Compress does not silently turn a PNG into JPEG to reach a smaller number. An already-efficient PNG may shrink very little or remain unchanged.
Choose another step explicitly
Resize if fewer pixels are acceptable. Convert to WebP or AVIF if the destination accepts it and transparency matters. Use JPEG only when a transparent background is unnecessary.
