Compression keeps the format
Compress is intended to reduce file size while keeping the source format and dimensions. It is different from Optimize, which can also convert or resize a file.
For PNG size targets, NativeActions first tries lossless compression, then conservative color reduction if necessary. Dimensions and transparency are preserved; the result must pass the image quality check. Normal PNG compression remains lossless.
Image and video compression use quality checks. Lossy formats can still lose some detail; compare the result before deleting any original.
Pick a compression option
- Select your files and open NativeActions → Compress.
- Start with the gentler option for everyday use, or choose stronger compression when size matters more.
- For an upload limit, choose a size preset or Custom target size. Click the unit label to cycle between MB, KB and GB.
- Wait for the result and check it against your destination’s size limit.
Why a file might not get smaller
Some files are already efficiently compressed. A requested target may also be impossible without going below the quality threshold. NativeActions does not silently solve this by reducing the dimensions.
An unreachable size target reports an error. Try a less restrictive target, resize the image explicitly, or choose an Optimize preset if changing the format and dimensions is acceptable.
Compressing a PDF
PDF compression recompresses supported document streams without downsampling the page images. This preserves page-image resolution, but a PDF full of already-compressed images may shrink very little.
