Messages and fixes

  1. “Files changed or the new names conflict. Refresh the preview”: a file was renamed, added or removed after the preview, or two files would receive the same name. Open the rename again and check the new preview.
  2. “Another rename is in progress”: wait for the current rename to finish, then try again.
  3. “Batch rename works with files on this PC”: copy files from a network share to a local folder first.
  4. “Renaming links, linked files or folders is not supported”: select ordinary files only.

USB sticks and memory cards

Recoverable renaming needs a file system that gives each file a stable identity. Drives formatted as FAT32 or exFAT, which are common on USB sticks and memory cards, do not provide it. Copy the files to a local NTFS drive, rename them there and copy them back.

OneDrive folders

Batch rename works in OneDrive-synced folders, including a synced Desktop. OneDrive may briefly hold a newly created file while it uploads; if a rename is rolled back, wait a moment and try again.
