What this changes
Extension rename changes the ending of the filename. It does not decode or encode the contents. Renaming photo.png to photo.jpg leaves PNG contents inside a filename that says JPEG.
Use it for corrections
Choose extension renaming only when you know the file already contains the appropriate format. Preview the proposed names, apply the change and check that the receiving application recognizes them.
Need another format?
Use Convert instead. Rename actions change selected filenames, so avoid using them while another task is reading those files. Keep a backup when correcting a large set of important filenames.
